Gonzo! Hunter Thompson

In my formative years as a journalism student, a howling voice came out of Aspen, Colorado. 

Hunter S. Thompson practiced Gonzo journalism, a blend of perceptive commentary, altered state exaggerations 

and brilliant satire.  Thompson's high water mark crested during the Nixon years; Some of his observations were 

legendary, and his style affected my writing in no small way.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and on the Campaign Trail '72 formed bookends as Hunter's most notorious works.

 Eventually, the excess  and extremes of a rock star persona  took it's toll. He became a literal caricature of himself, Gary Trudeau made Hunter 

the cartoon figure Duke in Doonesbury.  As the NY Times said, everyone wanted to be around Thompson, except Thompson.

One sunny day in 2006, in Woody Creek Colorado near Aspen, Hunter put a .38 to his head. End of a sad story. Hunter's life has just come out as a documentary. Johnny Depp narrates and Jimmy Buffett

comments in this movie. Made by the director who filmed, Enron's 'The Smartest Guys in the Room,' I officially cannot endorse this movie, 

but I couldn't pass on commenting.
