Christopher Laurie

It's a very hollow feeling these past days since we learned that Chrisotpher Laurie was killed in a traffic accident in Southern California.
At 33 with a young wife, a daughter and a child due in November, Christopher's death is more than tragic. I've known Topher for almost 15 years, I first got to know him when we were on Oahu with his dad Greg and did some body surfing together.  I had worked on a  project with him when he was at a design firm in Corona del Mar, and found him easy going and talented.
Recently, I ran into Christopher at a coffee shop and we had a nice time of catching up.
Being a pastor's  son alone has challenges-I certainly saw that with my boys. I cannot imagine what Greg and Cathe are going through. When I received the call, my stomach fell out - and I have not fully recovered.  For Christians, we know all the facts, but still, death often ambushes us and our minds go on tilt.
I am sure Harvest, Greg and all of us who  knew Christopher would take this opportunity to rededicate ourselves to getting the gospel to those who do not have the hope we share.
Imagine for a moment what parents face in this situation who do not know Jesus Christ..... that should provide motivation to move beyond the grief, and get our hand on the plow.

Gonzo! Hunter Thompson

In my formative years as a journalism student, a howling voice came out of Aspen, Colorado.
Hunter S. Thompson practiced Gonzo journalism, a blend of perceptive commentary, altered state exaggerations
and brilliant satire.  Thompson's high water mark crested during the Nixon years; Some of his observations were
legendary, and his style affected my writing in no small way.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and on the Campaign Trail '72 formed bookends as Hunter's most notorious works.
Eventually, the excess  and extremes of a rock star persona  took it's toll. He became a literal caricature of himself, Gary Trudeau made Hunter
the cartoon figure Duke in Doonesbury.  As the NY Times said, everyone wanted to be around Thompson, except Thompson.

One sunny day in 2006, in Woody Creek Colorado near Aspen, Hunter put a .38 to his head. End of a sad story. Hunter's life has just come out as a documentary. Johnny Depp narrates and Jimmy Buffett
comments in this movie. Made by the director who filmed, Enron's 'The Smartest Guys in the Room,' I officially cannot endorse this movie,
but I couldn't pass on commenting.

Jdog on the case

Jesse j Lusko does the call to worship at ccabq bible from 30 k
Nice job reading from Micah- nothing but net.

Where the work gets done

With a double rainbow overhead & various birds chirping about, this is a sanctuary where a lot work gets done.
I take the calls I want, and nobody just drops by to ask if I have 'just a minute.' Great coffee helps the process,
and what did I do before wireless internet? I can still hear the screech of AOL logging on by phone at 56, then: 'you've got mail.' Seems like that was the dark ages.
It is a happy day.

Why I Love July

July is a sweet month for sports.  First the classic Wimbledon Lawn & Tennis Championships.
I made a pilgrimage to Wimbledon Village and it was well worth the trip!  Just to stand at Center Court was epic.
I am all about Breakfast At Wimbledon for the Finals! Then the Tour de France kicks off  Perhaps the toughest sports challenge on the planet.  Unimaginable climbs, in all weather.
A month of extreme cycling at tempo. Alp de'Huez! And the time trials!  It makes July a total treat.

Not Montana, but not bad!

These are part of the fireworks for our Bible 30k on July 2nd.
Maybe not what you can buy on the frontier of Montana, but not
bad for a little church Bible study!

Hungry Sheep, Dangerous Sheep

We celebrated the 4th early at CCABQ with about 4,000 of our close friends. Bible at 30 k went mobile and people came early to eat. The caterer didn't bring enough food and he fled. Leaving me to scamper to McD's (I wore a disguise) and order hundreds of hamburgers. Seriously. It was a biblical setting, hundreds of people wandering around the park looking for food. They were gnawing the bark off our trees and giving me looks of death. I had to deliver. Papa John's Pizza and hundreds of double cheeseburgers and voila! They loved me. It was quasi-messianic. People thanked me around campus with french fries hanging out of their mouths. I know how the disciples must have felt in the wilderness: When Jesus said you give them something to eat!
It was tense for while, next year: new food company. I don't want this flock turning on me.
